A visit to Chestertown, MD offers a blend of history, arts, shopping, and an exciting variety of lodging and dining experiences. Home to the Schooner Sultana, Chestertown provides a link to the maritime heritage of the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay. The county seat of Kent County, on Maryland's Upper Eastern Shore, Chestertown is surrounded by the rich tapestry of farmland and Chesapeake Bay estuaries that almost surround the county with water.
Today, we’ll visit the waterfront town for the Mid-Atlantic’s largest annual gathering of Tall Ships, schooners, and historic wooden boats. Sultana Projects’ Downrigging Weekend features concerts, lectures, forums, fireworks, and opportunities to tour and sail on a fleet of historic ships representing over 400 years of maritime history & it’s all located in a two block area of the Chestertown Waterfront!
Plan to make this an afternoon into evening adventure as the evening will bring an illumination of the fleet from dusk until 9:00p.m. and fireworks will be launched at 7:30 p.m.
Viewing of the Fleet: Chestertown Waterfront or Cannon Street Pier
Viewing of the Fireworks: Chestertown Waterfront or Wilmer Park
Food Available: Downrigging Weekend Pavilion at the foot of High Street
Sunset Time: 6:03 p.m.
Location: Chestertown Waterfront and Wilmer Park
Thankfully, parking in Chestertown is not a big deal - even on Downrigging Weekend. Parking is available on the street and in several marked public parking lots.
