Seeing in HDR

Megan Snider

The new year brought a record-high number of members and new visitors to the Calvert Photography Club?s January meeting, where discussions of HDR (high dynamic resolution) photography and the holidays were plentiful.

President Guy Stephens was home with the flu, unfortunately, but newly-instated Vice President Jeff Smallwood led group introductions. Attending their first meeting were several folks looking to learn more about the craft and socialize with other local photographers, and we hope they were welcomed by others as we celebrate our first anniversary of the group.

Bill Conway presents HDR

Bill Conway, an award-winning local photographer, led the meeting?s discussion of HDR photography. Through on-screen demonstrations and helpful advice, Bill gave a solid tutorial of what HDR is, how to achieve it with almost any camera capable of bracketing and the available software used to help produce dynamic photos. Recommended programs were Photomatix, available for download as a free trial at, and Nik?s HDR Efex Pro, available here. Bill pulled up several of his own images and did a hands-on demonstration of how he creates wonderful HDR images.

Our group assignment for February?s meeting will be HDR images. Play around at home by taking three ?bracketed? photos (multiple exposures) and download a free trial of the HDR software. Jeff has also kindly offered to run your three photos through his HDR software if you email him the images.

Sandy Carr gave a status update on the possibility of working with Calvert County on several projects, including a yearly contest and photo exhibits at several tourist locations. Further information will be given soon. Contacts associated with tourism in Calvert County are seeking ?the human touch? for their displays ? images featuring people exploring Calvert County, be it in a boat or on a beach, etc. Contact Sandy for additional information.

After our presentations, group members shared their favorite photos taken during the holiday season ? and we were all delighted to see many of the techniques previously discussed evident in the shots! Bonnie?s bokeh photo and Greg?s lens-swirling shots gave Megan and Spencer, respectively, a thrill.

Our February meeting, slated for 10 a.m. on Feb. 19 at the Fairview Library in Owings, Md., will feature an ISO presentation from Jeff and more fun to come. Bring your HDR photos or any of your favorite shots to share with the group—no restrictions. And have a fun rest of January!
